India's capital Awakens to Hazardous Pollution Post Celebrations
As Tuesday dawned residents of the world's most polluted city encountered inhaling severely hazardous air that fell into the "alarming" category.
Alarming Pollution Levels
Several parts of the city recorded an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the healthy limit established by the global health authority.
Particular areas, readings of toxic particulate matter hit highs of 1,800, amounting to fifteen to twenty times exceeding healthy limits.
Firecracker Prohibition and New Developments
Since 2020, the government had enforced a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during Diwali due to their major role to the hazardous smog that blankets the metropolis as the cold season sets in.
Yet in recent months, the current city government petitioned the highest court to propose a relaxation of the prohibition.
They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been doubted by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a compromise between "cultural practices and public health".
Judicial Decision and Enforcement
To the disappointment of public health and environmental campaigners, judicial authorities approved the appeal, specifying that green firecrackers could be set off during specific hours throughout the celebrations.
Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable disregard of the time restrictions across the capital, with little monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly version.
Numerous monitoring devices throughout the city registered air quality spiking around midnight to extremely hazardous measurements seen during the festival in at least three years.
International Consequences
The proliferation of firecrackers during the festival also sparked a blame game with bordering the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab pointing to declining pollution levels in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles originating in neighboring India following the celebrations.
Chronic Pollution Crisis
The dangerously high levels of pollution in Delhi have continued as a significant challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the situation continuing to worsen.
Around the festival period, the concentration of dangerous particles in the atmosphere has been found to shoot up to 70% higher the worst records ever measured in Beijing, which was previously considered as the globally most contaminated metropolis.
Diverse Pollution Contributors
This crisis in the capital is attributed to a combination of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, development work, rubbish burning and haze from agricultural fires in nearby areas of farming communities.
Within these states, agricultural workers routinely ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, creating hazardous pollution that then gets trapped over the capital as cooler air descends.
Medical and Financial Toll
Public health and economic impact on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants residing in the metropolitan zone is significant, according to numerous investigations.
The contaminated air causes increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung disorders, and can potentially cause malignancies.
Environmental contamination is calculated to be accounting for approximately 10k early deaths annually in the city.
