Watkins Holds the Edge - But Calvert-Lewin Might Still Secure the World Cup

A solitary goal in his initial ten Premier League games this campaign had plenty of wondering if Dominic Calvert-Lewin's peak were in the past.

However, a just four weeks on, he is the most discussed forward in England following bagging seven goals in 6 straight games.

His newest finish, in a tie against Sunderland, brought his season's haul to eight, establishing him as the highest English goalscorer in the Premier League so far this season.

An Impressive Resurgence

The 28-year-old joined Leeds United on a Bosman move in the summer, after a nine-year period with Everton that was marred by fitness issues in its closing stages.

But, the numbers behind his comeback in Daniel Farke's new fast-breaking 3-5-2 system are extremely remarkable.

His six-match scoring streak puts him in exclusive company as only the 11th English player to score in six or more successive Premier League fixtures.

To provide context, even England captain Harry Kane did not achieve a run this long - his best is two individual five-match runs.

And the sole English striker to surpass Calvert-Lewin in the modern era is Jamie Vardy, who went on an eight-game scoring streak for Leicester City in 2019.

What's Behind the Hot Streak?

What is behind Calvert-Lewin so tough to stop in recent weeks? A recent opponent's manager described it succinctly.

"He has the impeccable timing," the manager stated. "He's smart and a really good striker and he found the timing to arrive exactly when needed."

That instinct and timing inside the 18-yard box was what made him a popular figure at his former team.

Experts highlight the system adjustment to a 3-5-2 as a major factor, helping more players to enter the box and occupy defenders, which has given the striker additional space.

"He is a traditional centre-forward," observed a former professional. "For the goal... it was a neat little touch beyond the keeper, a typical centre-forward's goal."
